My Story

My name is Suma Mwaitenda, a Tanzanian woman in my early 40s. I enjoy exploring new places and experiences, and have a keen interest in people, at least when they are unaware. Above all, I am a mother, which defines me the most. I have two children: a beautiful daughter and a loving son. My role as a mother motivates me to endure various sacrifices, and I strive to do my best in all aspects of my life.

My passion for sports is deeply rooted in my childhood. My father was a diehard football fan, and I spent my youth following in his footsteps. He was a fan and a football club member, and I did the same when I came of age. One day, I attended a general club meeting for the first time. I sat quietly in a corner, listening to the shouting and arguing about the club’s financial crisis and poor performance on the pitch.

On my way out, I encountered a friend, an architect, who was surprised to learn that I was also a club member and fan. He expressed his intention to pay for an election form to run for a position on the club’s board. He did so, which is how my sports management and leadership journey began. I eventually ran for a position on the Olympic committee board and won. I have chaired the women’s football team and have been co-opted by the ministry to serve on the committee for the women’s festival, among many other roles, over the years.

This occurred because someone recognized my abilities, believed I could help the club I loved, and shared my story. As a result, new opportunities opened up for me.
